ECR activities at the Yamagata International Diatom Symposium (August 28th to September 2nd 2023)
by Andrea Burfeid Castellanos for Young ISDR |

We wanted to start the organization of the Early Career Researcher (ECR) activities in the Yamagata International Diatom Symposium (IDS , https://isdr.org/international-diatom-symposium/). Here you have some information about the planned ECR activities:
Workshops
The workshops are planned on Monday, the 28th of August, at the beginning of the IDS. We have already settled on the organization of two parallel ECR workshops:
- Digital Diatom Analysis
- Molecular Diatom Analysis
If you are coming to Yamagata and are interested in participating in one of these workshops, please fill in this preliminary, non-binding form, to know how big the interest for the workshops might be: https://forms.office.com/e/bxE0JpXXRt . More information on this soon!
Speedtalks
This year we also plan to have the acclaimed Speed talks back. On September 1st we will have a one-hour time slot for the fun ECR activity: sharing your science/diatoms another way.
Our last Speed talk sessions included diatom storytelling (http://youngisdr.blogspot.com/2018/07/a-little-diatom-story-quest-for-family.html), artistic performances, songs (http://youngisdr.blogspot.com/2018/09/ill-flows-2nd-prize-of-speedtalks-at.html) and videos. Would you like to share your science, or diatom facts or anything relating to diatoms in a different way? Let us know through this form: https://forms.office.com/e/74vvies03T . If enough queries come, we might do it hybrid, so please let us know if you would like to participate online!
ECR Meeting
As in every IDS we will meet first to let you know what Young ISDR has been doing behind the scenes, but also to later network with somesupport from our mother society, ISDR.
- We plan a hybrid meeting since our current ECR Representative, Anrich Kock will not be there, so please consider participating even if you are not coming to Yamagata.
- Later we will go out together to network in a more relaxed setting. Stay tuned for more information!
We are looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible in Yamagata or online.
Please let us know if you have any questions or suggestions.
Have a great day!
