Sex and the Diatom online seminar on July the first
Sexual reproduction was discovered in diatoms in 1847 and the essential features of the life cycle (size reduction reversed by expansion of a special cell, the auxospore) were established about 20 years later. However, few people ever see auxosporulation and the complete life cycle is known for very few species. David Mann will explore why this is and whether it matters.
