Report on the North American Diatom Symposium

Thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone for being part of the North American Diatom Symposium community. Everyone brings their energy and perspective to our science. We hope that all had a relaxing and rewarding experience at Lakeside. We appreciate the generous funding for student travel and merit awards from the International Society for Diatom Research.
Students submitted essays to be considered for a travel award. Those students then ran the meeting by serving in teams, as session moderator and timekeeper, following recommended practice. Little did the students know, but the moderator/timekeeper pairs were evaluated – and the best team was recognized with a further award!

PROCEEDINGS OF THE 27th NADS
Would you like to publish the research presented in your talk or poster, or have a diatom related manuscript you need to get published (don’t we all)? Consider submitting a manuscript to the Proceedings of the 27th NADS. The proceedings will be published open access as a special issue in the long-running journal Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences. Mark Edlund, Sarah Spaulding, and Marina Potapova will serve as co-editors of the proceedings.
Support the North American Diatom Symposium, our students and early career researchers, efforts to secure diatom collections, sharing of knowledge, and much more by joining the International Society for Diatom Research (ISDR). The society provided more funding for students at this meeting than was taken in by non-student members. ISDR needs your support to continue to support our young scientist.
Give feedback to Diatoms of North American (diatoms.org). The website currently has over 30 million page views each month. Yet, there is no firm funding for the project. Do you use the website? How do you use it? Have you written it into grant proposals? Please describe, we need to know the scope of users! Who should pay for it? USE this form to talk back and inform the future of the project.
